Choosing the Perfect Wedding Ring

Spoiler - I'm not getting married but it's always good to know how to choose the perfect ring. It's something you are going to have for a very long time (hopefully) perhaps even for the rest of your life so you might as well invest in a ring that you like and that will last. It is likely that your engagement ring was chosen for you by your soon to be husband or wife but the wedding ring is your opportunity to pick the ring of your dreams. For a diamond novice like myself, talks to cut, colour, clarity and carat are all baffling concepts that add another daunting task to your pile before your big day. I've teamed up with Angelic Diamonds, specialist retailers in tension set engagement rings and bespoke wedding rings, to provide you with a definitive guide to choosing the perfect ring for your special day.

Diamond Cut
This is one of the most important characteristics of the ring since it's what makes your ring sparkle. The better the cut, the more it will sparkle, which is a must for magpies amongst us. Even if the diamond has perfect clarity and colour grade, it may still appear dull and it is only the cut that will prevent this. According to Angelic Diamonds, the perfect ring with an ideal diamond cut will not be to shallow or too deep, and it will allow light to pass through it so that it reflects evenly throughout the diamond. We've got to have those diamonds sparkling now don't we?

Colour
Colour is the second most important factor when considering the perfect wedding ring as this is the second thing detected after its sparkle. Angelic Diamonds recommend choosing a near-colourless diamond grade between G-H if you aim to make the most of your wedding ring on a budget. Colour wont be detected by the naked eye, meaning your ring will look perfect in person and in photos. Colour in diamonds often appears as a pale yellow which may potentially ruin photos so it is recommended that you avoid it.

Clarity
The clarity of your diamond refers to the small imperfections that are within all diamonds. These are often referred to as inclusions. Naturally, the less inclusions the better the clarity, meaning your ring will be super shiny.

Carat
Many people misunderstand this factor, thinking that it refers to the size of the diamond when it actually refers to its weight. The cut of the diamond will change how large the carat weight appears so you should find a balance of both that works for you and sits well on your finger but also looks as sparkly as you expected. You want it to look and feel good.

Quick Tips
  • Is carat weight important to you? Consider a diamonds with a good cut, with an SI1-SI2 clarity and an I or J colour grade.
  • Keep in mind the size of your finger as it will help determine how big the diamond appears.
  • Not all ring fittings will fit all diamond carats and shapes. You should consider the type of diamond shape you want before choosing its design.
If you're looking to get yourself a diamond wedding ring or you're just out to seriously treat yourself, I hope this guide was useful in helping you choose the perfect diamond. I particularly like the serenity style.
